At the family dinner, my father told me I had two days to get out because the house belonged to my brother now.

I was thirty years old that winter, an interior designer in Missoula, Montana, and for a long time I mistook usefulness for love.

Still, I said only one word at the dinner table.

“If the lender pulls, I’m dead.”
Then my mother, smaller than both of them even in fear: “What if Whitney starts asking questions?”
Colt’s answer came fast.
“Then get her out before she finds the papers.”
I stood in the dark with the glass in my hand and felt the entire shape of the night rearrange itself.
It was not about Colt needing a room.
