Nicholas gave me a pitying look that made my skin crawl. **“Don’t make this ugly,”** he said softly, as though he were the generous one.
I remember every face in that church. Every flicker of anticipation. Every person waiting for me to crumble.
Instead, I smiled.
A slow, steady smile.
Then I walked down the aisle toward them.
My heels echoed across the stone floor. The church became so quiet I could hear fabric rustling, someone coughing, a child being hushed in the third pew.
I stopped in front of the altar and turned, not to Nicholas or Vanessa, but to the guests.
**“Thank you all for coming,”** I said. **“I know you thought you were here for one wedding. It turns out you’re here for something much rarer.”**
Vanessa’s smile twitched. Nicholas frowned. My mother narrowed her eyes.
**“A public unveiling.”**
Nicholas stepped forward. **“What is that supposed to mean?”**
I looked at the officiant, Father Martin, who had known my father for twenty years. He gave me the smallest nod, then opened the sealed envelope Daniel had delivered ten minutes earlier.
**“Before any ceremony begins,”** I said clearly, **“there are a few matters that deserve to be addressed.”**
Nicholas laughed once, short and cold. **“This is pathetic.”**
“No,” I said. **“What’s pathetic is sleeping with your fiancée’s sister while trying to steal her company.”**
The church erupted.
Vanessa’s entire face changed. Nicholas went white.
My mother rose halfway from her seat. **“How dare you—”**
I held up my hand. **“Please. Sit down. You’ll want to hear the rest.”**
Daniel stepped from the side aisle with a projector remote. At the back of the church, the large screen originally prepared for our wedding slideshow flickered to life.
Only it wasn’t childhood photos and engagement pictures.
It was evidence.
The first image was a screenshot of a text thread between Nicholas and Vanessa.
**NICHOLAS: She still hasn’t signed the transfer draft.**
**VANESSA: Keep her distracted. She trusts you.**
**NICHOLAS: After the wedding, she won’t have a choice.**
A collective gasp filled the church.
Then came bank records. Photos of Nicholas entering hotels with Vanessa. Audio clips of my mother saying, **“Once Amelia marries him, everything gets simpler. She’s emotional. She’ll fold.”**
My mother lunged to her feet. **“This is illegal!”**
Daniel answered calmly, **“Everything was obtained lawfully.”**
Nicholas grabbed Vanessa’s arm so tightly she winced. **“Turn it off,”** he hissed.
But the worst was still coming.
I reached into my small handbag and removed a thin folder.
**“There’s one more thing,”** I said.
I looked directly at my mother.
**“Dad knew.”**
Silence.
The words dropped into the room like a blade.
Her lips parted. For the first time all day, she looked afraid.
