He nodded. “I don’t deserve this.”

Jessica and Mark did something harder than apologizing. They changed.

He turned down Harold’s standing invitation to “come into the family business” with a firmness I had not heard in his voice before. She pushed back on her mother for the first time in language so plain it apparently stunned the woman into silence. They cut their spending. Jessica called me brutal. Mark called me consistent.

Both were compliments.

They launched small. They made mistakes. They worked weekends. They argued about staffing and reconciled over takeout Thai food and spreadsheets. Money does not change people as much as people like to say. Mostly it gives them the means to reveal themselves more comfortably. A cruel man with money becomes a polished cruelty. I still drive the Honda sometimes.

Not every day. I’m not ridiculous. The thing has become temperamental in cold weather and makes a noise over speed bumps that sounds medically concerning. But I keep it. I keep it washed. I keep the cracked leather on the steering wheel wrapped in the same cover Mark bought me one Father’s Day when he was nineteen and broke.
