Mason remained with the company for a while in a reduced role. He was not good at humility, but he was trying in the awkward way spoiled men try when consequences finally introduce themselves.

Eventually, he left to work for a distributor in Rhode Island.

Before he left, he came by my office.

There was no hug.

We were not there yet.

He looked at the wall where I had hung a copy of Elise’s first letter beside Mia’s drawing.

“She really wrote that?” he asked.

He nodded.

“She loved you.”

It was the first time I said it without feeling like I was borrowing someone else’s truth.

He left quietly.
