The letter shattered everything Adeline had ever known. But it also gave her a new beginning.
Her gaze lifted to Lucien’s, and the realization hit her like a wave—this man, who had walked into her life like a shadow, was her protector now. And no matter what came next, she knew she wouldn’t face it alone.
The news broke the next morning. Nick Drayke was under investigation. Corporate accounts tied to his family were frozen across multiple jurisdictions. And as Adeline watched the reports from her hospital bed, she knew that this was only the beginning of the battle that lay ahead.
Lucien was right beside her, silent and watchful as always. But now, as she stared at the photo of her newborn children—her future—she felt a sense of peace for the first time in months.
“We’ll keep them safe, Adeline,” Lucien said, his voice low, but filled with something she could finally trust. “No one will ever take them from you.”
Adeline nodded, finally understanding that her life was not over. It had only just begun.
Adeline spent the next few days in the hospital, surrounded by the comforting hum of machines and the occasional murmur of nurses coming in and out of her room. It was a strange peace, unlike anything she had known before. In the quiet hours, when the world outside seemed to be moving without her, she found herself slowly processing the torrent of events that had swept her away.
Her body still felt sore from the delivery, and the memories of those early hours—of pain and fear, of Lucien’s unwavering presence—lingered like shadows in the corners of her mind. But the truth, the overwhelming truth that had been revealed in the letter her mother had left her, was what occupied her thoughts now. The revelation that Nick Drayke wasn’t just a man who had betrayed her, but that he had been part of a far larger scheme—one that had manipulated her life from the very start—was impossible to fully comprehend.
But Lucien had promised her something different. He had promised her protection, and now, even as she lay in that sterile hospital room, she realized that he had become her rock. The man who had once seemed like a cold, distant figure was now someone she could rely on. For the first time in her life, Adeline felt a sense of control. She wasn’t alone anymore. Not really.
Lucien’s presence in the days following the birth had been constant. He came to visit her regularly, bringing her food, asking if she needed anything, but it was the quiet way he watched over her and the babies that spoke louder than anything else. He wasn’t just guarding them from Nick’s reach; he was protecting their futures, ensuring that they would grow up safe from the same manipulations that had shaped her life.
But there was still so much left to understand. What did Lucien really want from her? Why had he taken such a personal interest in her mother’s death and in Adeline’s well-being? The question gnawed at her every time he stepped into the room. She couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to his involvement than simple protection.
It was late one evening when the questions bubbled to the surface. Lucien had come in quietly, as usual, just as the night nurse was finishing her rounds. Adeline had been staring out the window at the city lights when he entered. He looked at her for a long moment, his expression unreadable, before he sat down in the chair beside her bed.
“You’re thinking about your mother,” he said, his voice calm, like he could read her thoughts without effort.
Adeline turned to look at him, her gaze narrowing. “What exactly do you want from me, Lucien? Why did you help me? I still don’t understand.”
Lucien didn’t flinch. He simply looked at her, his eyes filled with a knowing that seemed to go beyond words. “I told you before,” he began, his voice steady, “I made a promise to your mother. She asked me to protect you, and that’s what I’m doing. But it’s not just about protecting you from Nick or anyone else. It’s about making sure you and your children have the chance to live without the shadow of lies hanging over you.”
Adeline swallowed hard, her heart pounding in her chest. “But that’s all I’ve known. Lies. For so long.”
Lucien nodded, his gaze intense. “I know. But you don’t have to live in the dark anymore. You deserve the truth, Adeline. You deserve to know what’s really been happening behind the scenes. Your mother… she was involved in something far bigger than you realize. The truth about your family goes deeper than you think, and I’ve been waiting for the right time to show you.”
Adeline’s head spun as he spoke. “What do you mean? What does any of this have to do with my mother’s death? And why hasn’t Nick been exposed yet?”
Lucien’s jaw tightened at the mention of Nick’s name, but his expression remained unchanged. “Nick’s downfall is inevitable, but it’s not something that happens overnight. We’ve already started the process. The networks he’s been hiding behind are slowly unraveling. You’ll see the pieces fall into place soon enough.”
He paused, his gaze softening just a fraction. “But the truth about your mother… it’s going to be harder to accept than you think. She wasn’t just an innocent bystander in all of this, Adeline. She played a role in the power games that controlled her life and yours.”
Adeline’s heart raced. “What do you mean?”
Lucien leaned forward, his voice low. “Your mother worked closely with men like Nick’s father—powerful men who used wealth, influence, and manipulation to get what they wanted. But she wasn’t just a pawn in their game. She was a player, too. She made choices, Adeline. Choices that, in the end, cost her everything.”
Adeline felt a chill settle in her bones as she absorbed his words. Her mother, the woman she had always seen as a pillar of strength, had been a part of the same system that had tried to tear her life apart. It felt like a betrayal, one that cut deeper than anything Nick had ever done.
“I don’t understand,” Adeline whispered. “If she was involved, why didn’t she warn me? Why didn’t she tell me what was really going on?”
Lucien’s gaze softened, almost regretful. “She did, in a way. She left you a letter. It wasn’t just to tell you about Nick, Adeline. It was to explain everything. To tell you why things had to unfold the way they did. She knew, in the end, that you would need to understand the full story. And she trusted me to make sure you did.”
Adeline’s mind raced as she processed his words. “So, my entire life… has been a game to them? To the people in power?”
Lucien didn’t answer immediately. He simply looked at her, his eyes filled with a mixture of regret and determination. Finally, he spoke, his voice heavy with meaning. “Yes. But the game isn’t over. You still have a chance to decide your future, Adeline. You can break free from this cycle. You don’t have to be a part of their world anymore. You don’t have to live under the weight of their lies.”
The weight of his words settled over her like a blanket, suffocating and comforting all at once. Could she really break free? Could she take her children and create a life that was truly her own?
But as much as the idea of freedom enticed her, there was still so much more she needed to know. There was still one question that haunted her heart—one question that Lucien hadn’t yet answered.
“Lucien,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper, “why are you doing this for me? Why are you helping me when there’s nothing left for you to gain?”
For the first time since he’d entered the room, Lucien’s expression softened completely. He reached out, taking her hand gently in his, his thumb brushing over her knuckles in a comforting gesture.
“I’m helping you because it’s the right thing to do,” he said quietly. “And because… I owe your mother a debt. But there’s more, Adeline. There’s always been more.”
The weight of his words lingered between them, heavy with unspoken meaning. Adeline’s heart skipped a beat as she realized that there was something Lucien wasn’t telling her—something about their connection that went beyond the protection he had promised.
