A gasp came from the middle table.

Sandra covered her mouth.

Ethan’s Uncle Richard whispered, “My God.”

The video kept playing.

“By Monday,” Patricia said on screen, “Sloan’s engagement photos are on the mantel, and the whole deal closes by March.”

Vivian’s voice, pleased and sharp, answered, “Four point two million dollars. Not bad for a rehearsal dinner speech.”

Patricia laughed again.

Then came the sentence that split the room open.

The video ended.

The screen went black.
